Like that couple whose Facebook walls read like a day-to-day update of how much they love each other at that moment, Justin and Selena just can’t seem to stop writing songs about each other. Unlike status-happy couples, she apparently gave him a heads-up that it was coming.
Hey babe it’s me, I just wanted to call to tell you that I love you so so so so much – just wanted to let you know that you are my princess, you are worthy of all of the love in the world, you are the love of my life. [1]
Gomez begins her song not with her own voice but with a literal quote from the JBiebz, to remind the listener that this song is definitely written for him. In another interpretation, Justin Bieber got drunk and tried to be Sinatra, and Selena heard the echoes of a killer marketing strategy.
Now’s all we got/And time can’t be bought.
Despite their combined millions of dollars, Selena acknowledges that she and Justin cannot buy time, in the same way that the Beatles cannot buy love, Steve Jobs can’t buy a functional pancreas, and college students working in unpaid internships cannot buy anything.
I know it inside my heart/Forever will forever be ours/Even if we try to forget/Love will remember
Selena will always remember that they dated. Also, is love really just the media? Because US weekly has an extensive history of their relationship in their archives.
You said you loved me, I said I loved you back/What happened to that? What happened to that?/All your promises, and all the plans we had/What happened to that? What happened to that?
Gomez uses her incredible lyrical prowess to refer back to the voicemail in which Bieber proclaims his love, and then elaborates that she too informed him of reciprocal feelings. She leaves the listener wondering: what happened to that? [2]
Boom gone/Yeah we move on/Even if we try to forget
Selena answers her own question. What happened to that? “Boom gone.”
Love will remember you/Love will remember me/I know it inside my heart/Forever will forever be ours/Even if we try to forget/Love will remember/Love will remember/Love will remember/Love will remember/Love will remember
If Selena repeats these lyrics enough, Love is going to have this damn song stuck in her head for a really long time.
The trips we dreamed of takin’, the tags left on the map/What happened to that? What happened to that?/When all you had was nothing, when all we did was laugh/What happened, what happened, what happened to that?
Being celebrities, the components of Jelena can pick any place on the globe and just sort of go there in between tours. They apparently have. However, an unforeseen breakup has rained on their vacation plans the same way Katrina rain on the vacation plans of would-be 2005 Mardi Gras enthusiasts.
Break down the walls, let heaven in/Somewhere in forever we’ll dance again/We used to be inseparable/I used to think I was irreplaceable/We lit the whole world up/Before we blew it up/I just don’t know how we screwed it up/Forever
Selena calls to remove the barriers in her relationship with Bieber, and to replace them with a flood of the utopian bliss that was shared at one point. Although she at one point believed that she was irreplaceable, he has gone “to the left,” as Beyonce would say. Selena sings that her relationship with Bieber filled her world with metaphorical light, before it exploded and caused widespread destruction and desolation. Interestingly enough, she seems to state that she and Bieber will exist again as an item “somewhere in forever,” but shortly afterwards sings that “we screwed it up forever.” We’re not quite sure what you’re trying to say right here, Selly-goose, but we hope Bieber gets it.
[1] This is either fake, or Justin Bieber has well outdone my boyfriend for the most heartmeltingly (to its intended recipient) nauseating (to everyone else) voicemail.
[2] Recent data suggests that there is a 90% chance the listener is a Jelieber who knows exactly what happened to that, and which time it happened, and what “that” was, and who was making it happen.
